  • Monarchs Need Milkweeds

    Bonnie Stahlecker

21st Century Skills Communication Creative Writing Critical Thinking Environmental Language Arts Life Skills Science

This program uses the art of bookmaking to engage students in a conversation about ecology. Each student will make a book that illustrates the crucial relationship between the monarch butterfly and the milkweed plant. With visual examples Bonnie will emphasize the special connection necessary for the monarch to continue to exist. Prior to the visit, teachers are encouraged to show the students the YouTube videos: Amazing Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly and Monarch Butterflies Migration Google Earth Tour.

Note: There are two book projects that share this topic:
The book designed for lower grades (2nd-3rd) has two large student drawn illustrations that show four stages of the monarch’s life cycle amid milkweed plants, with ample room for words.
The upper grades (4th-5th) will make a triangle-shaped book with a hidden foldout composite illustration of the six stages of the monarch’s life cycle displaying the symbiotic relationship with milkweed plants. There are six triangle shape pages for the writing.

We explore the possibilities of these magic keys, focus on the senses in creating a story or poem together by the class, then students make up their own. “My key opens a haunted house. Beware. Take my key if you dare.” As we read, we pass the key –the gift of our imaginations– along.
