Lou Ann Homan

About the artist

Lou Ann Homan, based in Angola, Indiana, specializes in storytelling, theater, and writing. A practitioner for more than 30 years and a teaching artist with Arts for Learning for 25 years, Lou Ann is a “lover of the arts” who enjoys teaching students of all ages, whether they’re pupils in her university courses or elementary students in Arts for learning programs. Lou Ann has been recognized for her work with numerous grants and commissions, including two teacher fellowship grants from the Lilly Endowment. “It is imperative to teach children to express themselves through language,” Lou Ann says. “It teaches kids that everyone has a story to tell, and it shows them the importance of listening.” Lou Ann also believes storytelling can enliven difficult school subjects for students, helping them connect with everything from distant historical events to abstract math concepts. Furthermore, it can help them get along with their peers and authority figures. “Storytelling can also really open the doors of communication between students, parents, and teachers,” she says. “It encourages expression and brings people together.” Learn more about Lou Ann at her website.
