Grant Awarded by Johnson County Community Foundation Sponsors “International Geographic Tour” Residency at Northeast Elementary
Indianapolis – February 6, 2015… Arts for Learning presents the “International Geographic Tour” – an innovative arts in education residency which introduces students to new cultures through live performances and hands-on art projects. Students in the afterschool program at Northeast Elementary will work with Carol Tharp-Perrin, teaching artist, to learn about the various cultures, traditions, and customs of the people of North and South America.
The residency program also includes an internship opportunity for Kristin Stephens, a Franklin College student studying English and Creative Writing. Kristin will be responsible for assisting the teaching artist in the classroom, documenting the program, and working with students to instill lesson concepts.
“We are excited to provide quality arts in education programs for the students in the afterschool program at Northeast Elementary and we look forward to continuing our apprenticeship program in partnership with Franklin College. Arts for Learning is grateful for the continued support of the Johnson County Community Foundation and the English Department at Franklin College,” says JoEllen Florio Rossebo, President and CEO of Arts for Learning.
The Johnson County Community Foundation is one of the area’s largest providers of grants and scholarships. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Johnson County, now and for generations to come, by building community endowment, addressing needs through grantmaking, and providing leadership on key community issues.
Arts for Learning reaches nearly 65,000 Indiana students annually by providing professional teaching artists who lead performances, workshops, and residencies. The organization closes the “aspiration gap” in Indiana schools and communities by introducing children to the arts and making connections that unlock their creative and intellectual potential. Arts for Learning serves as Indiana’s expert on the arts in education and has been serving Indiana schools and communities for more than 50 years.
