Francisco Pizarro, To Serve You (Grade levels 5-12)
He is hardly mentioned in US history books, but his life’s work still affects a continent today. Five hundred years ago, when the sword was definitely mightier than the pen, this illiterate conqueror of the Incas was brave, committed, and ruthless. His search for gold cities reminds us of the best and worst in ourselves.
Hank lived in Peru for five years and his research took him along much of the old Inca highways. He interviewed scholars and during the summer of 2019 toured the state of Oklahoma as part of their summer Chautauqua, with the theme Hispanic Influences in the Americas. As one college professor wrote, “Hank’s performance made me admire a man I despise.”
