Starting Your Child in the Arts

By David Johnson, Event Marketing Intern

Research has proven there is a direct link between playing an instrument as a kid and being a more effective learner later on in life. As a parent you might be curious on how to get your little one started in the arts but may be confused on where exactly to start or even what type of instrument they should “study”.

No worries, I am here to help! First, I would start off by recommending you check with your child’s middle and high school to see what type of band and/or orchestra programs they offer.

Next you will want to work with them to help select an instrument. Some things to take into consideration are their size, maturity level, and overall interest in music. You will obviously not want an instrument that is too large and awkward for them to use. Also, do not go out and buy the most expensive equipment to start off. Two reasons for this, many instruments are very fragile and require special attention and secondly your child may lose interest in playing an instrument altogether.

Lastly, now that you have got a general idea of what you might be looking for, take them to a music store or arrange for them to meet with a band director to try a number of common starter instruments and go from there!
